Volunteer Spotlight - Cecilia Dyck

I’m a music teacher here in Merritt for 20 years. When I was asked to share how I volunteer with arts and music in Merritt, this kids piano method song came to mind.  “I take care of the forest trees, I’m a forest ranger.”

Upon moving here, I was handed over the responsibility of looking after the “Yamaha 7 foot Grand Piano,”  Merritt’s pride and joy in the art community. To this day, I still take care of the grand piano, and have earned the title, “Piano Waterer!” Over 30 years ago, Bruce Vogt visited Merritt and gave a concert on an old clunker. At the end of the show, Bruce announced he was donating the proceeds towards a new piano for the community. In the next few years, with leadership from Shirley Smith, fundraisers made it possible for the art council to buy this wonderful Yamaha C7 piano.

Music is a living art. Generally people are sharing their musical creativity in person, presently! There are so many benefits for live music; our culture, health, relationships, emotional connection, and brain development. I believe that with some effort, the popularity of  live music can grow again in society.

I spend a lot of my time brain storming ideas to encourage live music. I have brought in special guests to put on concerts and workshops for music students. At Christmas time I book various venues for kids to gain confidence and experience performing around town. Two years ago I taught some introduction to music classes in the lecture rooms at the art gallery.

Last summer, I invited music loving students from all of Nicola valley area to put on a show for Music in the Park. Many of these events have been heavily supports by the NVAC. I am very grateful for their immediate willingness to work together and help where ever the need is.

Right now, I am still teaching piano out of my home. Presently I have mostly beginners, and a few wonderful promising diligent learners.  I also teach violin, which I really enjoy for variety. I also run a group class called Maestro Music Club that introduces kids to a wide variety of instruments. All the students challenge me to share my love of music, and find outlets for them to grow and share theirs. It’s a joy to have a job of inspiring music in eager learners. I couldn’t think of a better career!

Thank you, Cecilia, for all that you do for the art if music in the Nicola Valley, and for the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council!
